When flying economy, creature comforts are few and far between. This makes the small differences from airline to airline all the more important, since it's a game of inches. Recline is one of the most basic yet valuable amenities offered by airlines, and while it's somewhat negligible on one or two-hour flights, it's a necessity on long-haul routes like those from the United States to Europe or Asia.
