A few years ago, United Airlines switched its Hemispheres in-flight magazine to a lighter paper. It reduced the cost of producing and distributing the magazine, but the bigger savings came from an unexpected source. By cutting a couple of ounces off the weight of the magazine, the carrier was able to save an astonishing 180,000 gallons of fuel annually, which was worth approximately $500,000 in today's money.
