The future of unmanned air systems (i.e. drones) is racing forward on all fronts. Emerging technology from near-peer adversaries and 5th-generation aircraft cost concerns have driven the US Air Force to push for new and better-unmanned platforms. The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper has been serving the US armed forces well and faithfully since its introduction in 2007. However, its age is beginning to show, and it is now in pursuit of a successor via the “MQ-Next” initiative.
