The FAA Is Taking Action In Response To Air Traffic Safety Scares By Increasing Rest Requirements

Due to fatigue concerns, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have ordered air traffic controllers to take a minimum of ten hour rest breaks between shifts, a move from a previous nine hour requirement. This comes in the face of a widespread air traffic controller shortage, as the industry remains understaffed. The new requirements are expected to be implemented within 90 days. With the increase to ten-hour breaks, it hopes to improve safety in the skies, with those in the tower having sufficient rest. If an ATC works a night shift, the requirement will move to a 12-hour rest period.
