What Are Microwave Landing Systems?

Since the 1930s, aircraft have been using Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) to descend upon an airport. Using radio signals, an ILS ensures pilots are on the correct lateral and vertical path to land safely, sometimes bringing them down to the runway. However, in recent decades, the aviation industry has made advancements in landing system technology, one example being the microwave landing system (MLS).
