On July 17, 1996, Trans World Airlines Flight 800 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 12 minutes after taking off from New York’s JFK airport as a result of an explosion. With 212 passengers and 18 crew members onboard, the Boeing 747-100 (N93119) was bound for Rome (FCO) with a stopover in Paris (CDG). All 230 people onboard perished in what became the third deadliest aviation incident in US history.
