In September 2017, Airbus launched the Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe (BLADE) project to potentially increase the fuel efficiency of passenger aircraft. Airbus aimed to reduce the friction drag over the wing by 10%, with up to a 5% reduction in carbon emissions. Airbus also aimed to achieve fuel savings of up to 5% on a typical medium-haul flight.
