Why Reverse Thrust Is Not Used In Flight

The reverse thrust of an aircraft is normally used after landing as a means of braking. In most modern airliners, its use is banned in the air because it could make for undesirable flight characteristics that could lead to loss of control. One famous example is Lauda air flight 004, where a thrust reverser deployed unexpectedly, sending the plane into a dive and, ultimately, causing it to break up and crash.
