Born on December 8, 1892, in Bundaberg, Queensland, Herbert John Louis Hinkler was an Australian aviation pioneer and the first person to fly solo from England to Australia. Fascinated with the principle of flight, Hinkler would observe long-legged Ibis wading birds flying in wetlands near his school.
