Twenty years ago, on the 1st July 2002, two planes crashed above the small town of Überlingen in southern Germany, leading to a total of 71 deaths across the two aircraft. The main cause of the flight can be attributed to the air traffic controller working on two workstations at the same time, which meant that he failed to ensure adequate separation between the two aircraft, therefore leading to the collision. The result of this extremely unfortunate incident was an extensive investigation by the German government, which called for additional training to both pilots and air traffic controllers in order to prevent such catastrophes from occurring in the future.
