With the United States Air Force (USAF) Convair T-29 trainers having been around since the mid-1950s, the Air Force needed a replacement aircraft to train its navigators. After studying several aircraft, including the McDonnell Douglas DC-9, the Air Force placed an order with Boeing for 19 T-43s, a modified version of the Boeing 737-200.
