Before we get into AirTran's final flight on December 28, 2014, let's take a look and see how the airline came into being and why Southwest took it over. Initially headquartered in Orlando, Florida, AirTran started life in 1993 as Conquest Sun Airlines. Conquest Sun Airlines was then purchased in 1994 by the AirTran Corporation and renamed AirTran Airways.
