When it came to powered flight, Atlantic City and its airfield played a prominent part in the lexicon of aviation. The word "Air-Port" first appeared in a newspaper article in 1919 when referring to New Jersey's first dedicated facility for aircraft. First opened in 1910 as a place to hold air carnivals, Bader Field was a hotspot for aviation pioneers like the Wright Brothers and Glen Curtiss. Bader Field was also the departure point for explorer Walter Wellman's failed attempt to fly across the Atlantic in an airship named America.
