Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines will launch a touchless check-in powered by SkyTeam technology. Both carriers will be the first two members to implement the alliance-first technology, enabling digital check-in for multi-airline travel via Aeromexico’s and Delta’s existing apps or websites. Let’s investigate further.
Touchless check-in
SkyTeam Digital Spine is a technology platform that allows different airline systems to talk to each other.
Now, it has developed a seamless technology allowing travelers flying with two or more SkyTeam carriers to check-in digitally and get their boarding passes through either airline’s self-service channels. Then, passengers can go directly to security without using a kiosk or seeing an agent. This allows a faster, touchless airport experience.
Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines are the first two members to implement SkyTeam’s Digital Spine technology. The use of seamless technology will impact more than 50,000 customers each month.
Walter Cho, Chairman of the Alliance Board of SkyTeam, said,
“SkyTeam’s innovative technology is digitizing the travel experience to increase health safety and convenience by avoiding the need to wait in line. We are working fast to implement this new check-in technology across most members in 2022.”

How will the system work?
Aeromexico already introduced SkyTeam’s touchless travel technology last year. Since then, more than 300,000 customers have already successfully used the service. The introduction through the Mexican carrier is paving the way for a wider rollout across more SkyTeam members this year.
Both Delta and Aeromexico provided an example of how SkyTeam’s seamless check-in technology would work.
If a customer purchases a Delta ticket from Mexico City to Raleigh-Durham via New York-JFK, the first flight would be operated by Aeromexico, and the second by Delta. By using this new technology, the passenger could use Delta’s or Aeromexico’s apps or websites to check in for both flights, generating boarding passes.
Allan Bellemare, Delta’s President – International, said,
“We know that using digital channels, such as the Fly Delta app, to check-in and get your boarding pass is an important part of creating a stress-free travel experience. The ability to check-in using our digital channels for any Aeromexico flight is a big win for our customers when they travel internationally.”
Aeromexico and Delta’s joint efforts
The Mexican and US carriers have one of the strong partnerships worldwide. Currently, Delta owns about 49% of the voting rights in the Mexican airline, although that is set to change as soon as Aeromexico’s Chapter 11 Plan kicks in. Then, Delta will dilute to approximately 20%.
Nonetheless, both companies will continue nurturing their partnership.
The Joint Cooperation Agreement between both parties is the largest cross-border alliance in the airline industry between a Mexican and an American airline. Between April 2017 and April 2021, both carriers had collectively transported more than 22 million passengers on transborder routes.
Currently, both carriers are offering 3,678 flights between Mexico and the United States, 3.6% fewer operations than in February 2020. Nevertheless, they are offering 0.8% more seats.
Currently, these airlines’ most served route between both countries is Cancun-Atlanta. Delta has 172 scheduled flights in February 2022, 11.0% more than in 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
