Which Airports Does Fraport Own?

German company Fraport is well known as the owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport (FRA). But it also owns several airports and has partial interests in even more. The company is involved in operations at all of these airports and several others that it does not have a stake in. This article takes a quick look, by area, at all the main airports Fraport is involved with.

Fraport and Frankfurt aiport

Fraport was founded in 1924 under the name Südwestdeutsche Luftverkehrs AG as the operator of Frankfurt airport at its previous Rebstock location. This transferred to Rhein-Main Airport when it opened in 1936. It became a listed company (as Flughafen Frankfurt/Main AG) on the German stock exchange in 2001, as it remains today.

For some time, Fraport also owned part of Frankfurt Hahn airport. When it was established as a civilian airport in 1993, Fraport took a 65% stake. In 2009, Fraport sold its stake in the then loss-making airport to the local government. Chinese company HNA Group took a major stake in Frankfurt Hahn in 2017.

Other European airports

Airport ownership and operation can be complicated in many countries. Governments often maintain partial ownership of airports or offer them for long-term lease rather than purchase. With this in mind, Fraport has full or majority ownership and control at the following European airports:

• Ljubljana airport, Slovenia. The Slovenian government privatized the main airport for the country in 2014. Fraport took a 75.5% stake in Ljubljana airport initially and has since increased this to a 100% stake.
• Varna airport (VAR) and Burgas airport (BOJ), Bulgaria. Fraport has a 60% stake in both these Bulgarian airports, with a 35-year concession that started in 2006.
• Antalya Airport, Turkey (AYT). Fraport holds a 51% stake.
• 14 airports in Greece. Fraport has a major deal with Greece to operate 14 regional airports (Thessaloniki, Aktio, and Kavala on the mainland and 11 island airports). This is a 40-year lease acquired for an investment of €1.2 billion ($1.53 billion) in 2017.

Airports in Asia

Fraport has the following major investments in airports in India and China:

• Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). Fraport holds a 10% stake in Delhi International Airport Private Limited, which manages and operates the airport. This is a 30-year lease that runs until 2036.
• Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIA). Fraport has a 24.5% stake.

Airports in the Americas

And in the Americas, it has stakes as follows:

• Lima International Airport (LIM). Fraport holds an 80.01% stake in Lima airport. It has been involved since the construction of the airport in 2001 and has increased its stake since then.
• Fortaleza Airport, Brazil (FOR). Fraport acquired a 30-year lease to operate the airport in 2017.
• Porto Alegre Airport (POA), Brazil. Fraport took on a 25 lease in 2018.
• US airport concessions through Fraport USA. It also has 100% ownership of a retail concession operating major parts of the passenger terminal space at several US airports. These are at Baltimore (BWI), Cleveland (CLE), Nashville (BNA), New Jersey (EWR), New York (JFK), and Pittsburgh (PIT).
