On Thursday morning, a Bamboo Airways A321neo aircraft was being pushed back in Hanoi when it backed straight into another aircraft parked behind it. Both planes sustained minor damages to the fuselage. The Vietnamese CAA says the incident occurred as a result of non-compliance with the proper operational protocol.
Two-hour delay as a result
About 07:00 local time at Hanoi’s Nôi Bài International Airport, the tail of a Bamboo Airways Airbus A321neo collided with the nose of an aircraft of the same type and operator. The incident occurred while the plane was being pushed back in what the airline calls ‘unfavorable weather conditions’.
The jet, registered as VN-A222 was operating flight QH1621 to Duong Dong in Phu Quoc. Bamboo Airways deployed a replacement A321neo registered as VN-A888, and passengers arrived at their destination with a delay of a little over two hours.
“Bamboo Airways sincerely apologizes to passengers for the unexpected incident, and at the same time, would like to thank passengers of flight QH1621 for understanding, sympathy, and cooperation in the process of changing planes to make the journey,” the leisure-focused carrier said in a statement.

Human error
In a statement issued by the airline, it said that the two aircraft had received light scratches on the fuselage and that proper procedure had been followed immediately after the incident. Meanwhile, the event will not affect any upcoming departures.
The Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Dinh Viet Thang, also shared in the statement that initial investigations showed that the driver of the towing tractor had performed the incorrect procedure. A number of collisions have taken place at Nôi Bài recently, particularly during bad weather and limited visibility.
The two parties involved
The aircraft on the receiving end of the close encounter was another Bamboo Airways A321neo, registered as VN-A590. It was not in operation and had been parked since the evening of October 31st when it arrived in Hanoi from Huê in central Vietnam.
Both aircraft are 3.3 years old and arrived with Bamboo Airways in August 2019. They are leased from Aviation Capital Group and were initially delivered to now-defunct Primera Air Scandinavia. VN-590 was painted in special colors to celebrate the young airline’s first one million passengers.
The Bamboo fleet
Bamboo Airways currently has 30 aircraft in its fleet – six of those are A321neos. Another six are A320neos, and current engine option versions of the A319, A320, and A321 round out the narrowbody segment of the fleet. Five Embraer ERJ-190s make up the regional jet portion.
Meanwhile, for its widebody long-haul aspirations, Bamboo has gone with Boeing and the 787 Dreamliner. It currently has three but has orders for an additional 11. One of Bamboo’s Dreamliners operated the carrier’s inaugural flight to London Heathrow just two days ago.
