Meet US Regional Carrier Cape Air’s Fleet

At the 2019 Paris Air Show, it was announced that Cape Air would add the Eviation Alice electric aircraft to its fleet. Before the Hyannis, Massachusetts-based carrier takes on this next-generation plane, we thought we’d take a look at its present holdings.

Impressive expansions

The airline highlights that since its CEO and founder Dan Wolf launched flights between the Massachusetts locations of Boston and Provincetown in 1989, its mission has been to get its passengers to their destination as swiftly as possible. Cape Air then added the likes of, Hyannis, New Bedford, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Providence to its network.

Over the years, the airline has expanded its fleet to provide flights to several domestic and international destinations. After spreading to the likes of South Florida and the Caribbean in the 1990s, the airline traveled all the way to Micronesia for the first time in 2004. In the same year, the airline used its new ATR-42 aircraft to reach the oceanic destinations of Guam, Rota, and Saipan.

New arrivals

The latest addition to the fleet is the Tecnam P2012 Traveller. This 11-seater joined the airline’s facilities in September 2019. Over the last week, this type has been spotted at the likes of Albany and Nantucket.

“On October 16, 1989, Dan Wolf’s passion for aviation and entrepreneurial spirit came together as Cape Air’s first commercial flight took off from Provincetown Municipal Airport, and headed to Boston Logan International Airport,” Cape Air shares on its website.

“30 years to the day of that milestone flight, Dan’s dream of an airline powered by people, passion and innovation entered a new era as the Tecnam P2012 Traveller was introduced to the Cape Air fleet.”

The fleet mix

Today, Cape Air operates three aircraft models. The carrier shares that it holds four Britten-Norman Islanders, 70 Cessna 402s, and 24 Tecnam P2012 Travellers.

The Britten-Norman Islander family took its first flight in June 1965 and is still being produced today, with over 1,200 units built. The British light utility plane is a favorite among several regional operators around the world.

Cape Air is the largest operator of the Cessna 402. This Piston engine aircraft is no longer in production, with the wider program halting production in 1985.

A Cape Air Cessna 402C crashed when landing in Provincetown while operating a flight from Boston on September 9th this year. Registration N88833, performing Flight 2072, had six passengers and a single crew member on board. All seven people were injured.

Altogether, serving over 35 destinations and holding connection agreements with numerous major players, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Condor Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Seaborne Airways, and United Airlines, Cape Air’s small-size aircraft see plenty of action across its network.
