In Photos: 5 Aircraft We’re Excited To See At The Dubai Airshow

There are less than two weeks to go until personnel from across the aviation industry convene in Dubai for the 2021 edition of the Dubai Airshow. This year’s show will be particularly special, as it will be the first major in-person aviation event since the start of the pandemic.

For aviation enthusiasts, alongside huge aircraft orders, one of the show’s highlights is the array of aircraft from airlines and manufacturers worldwide. This list is unconfirmed based on what we know so far and is subject to change. With that in mind, in no particular order are five aircraft we’re excited to see this year in Dubai:

airBaltic’s Airbus A220

At Simple Flying, we love the Airbus A220, and the airBaltic A220 holds a special place in our hearts, especially when it comes to airshows. The aircraft was actually the location of our first CEO interview with Martin Gauss. As such, this is definitely one that the team attending the airshow this year is keen to see.

airBaltic’s A220 will be just a small part of the Airbus lineup. The manufacturer is expected to bring everything from the ACJ320neo all the way to the A350-900. Meanwhile, Etihad is expected to bring the slightly larger A350-1000, and Emirates will bring the giant of the skies (but more on that later).

The Irkut MC-21

The Irkut MC-21 is Russia’s answer to the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo. The aircraft is still undergoing a testing and certification program, having first flown in 2017. However, first deliveries to Russian airlines are expected next year. Simple Flying was able to get up close and personal with the jet earlier this year at the MAKS Airshow in Russia, and we’re excited to see it in Dubai.

flydubai’s Boeing 737 MAX

The Boeing 737 MAX was absent from the 2019 Dubai Airshow given its worldwide grounding at the time. Now it’s back, and home carrier flydubai intends to bring a 737 MAX 8 to the show. At the weekend, the airline teased us with images of its new business class cabin, so it would be a surprise if the airline isn’t bringing this to the airshow to show off.

The 737 MAX will be just part of Boeing’s product lineup on display at the airshow. Last week, Boeing’s Commerical Airplane CEO told Sam Chui that the carrier would be bringing a full lineup of aircraft to the airshow, including the Alaska Airlines ecoDemonstrator, and the Boeing 777X, which will be making its public debut.

Embraer’s E195-E2 profit hunter

Returning to the show this year will be Embraer’s E195-E2 profit hunter. Unlike the 737 MAX, this aircraft will be a returner, having appeared at the 2019 edition of the airshow. The plane is a gamechanger for regional aviation and has already entered service with carriers such as KLM.

The Emirates Airbus A380

Last but not least, we couldn’t miss the mighty Airbus A380. Each time the show rolls around, Emirates pulls one of its aircraft out of service to show it off at the show, a task that’ll be slightly easier this time around. It wouldn’t come as a massive surprise if Emirates brought a jet with the new premium economy cabin, something that it’ll be keen to show off.

The plane will be one of four expected from Emirates, with the 777 set to join alongside a Cirrus training aircraft and the airline’s luxury private A319 jet.
