Spanish national flag carrier Iberia says that it has, with its summer 2022 schedule, proven its commitment to linking Spain with the rest of the world. In a statement released last week, the Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD)-based airline said that for summer 2022, it was increasing its number of flights to Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico, Miami, and New York.
Flights to the destinations mentioned above will have five additional frequencies per week. In April, Iberia will resume flights to San Francisco and add two new American destinations Dallas and Washington, to its list of flights to the United States.
Despite having published a favorable schedule for winter 2021/2022, Iberia says it is betting on aviation recovering following the battering it took from the COVID-19 pandemic. For the winter season, Iberia has increased the frequencies of short and medium-haul flights while also introducing for the first time flights to Cali, Colombia, and Malé in the Maldives.
Latin America is especially important for Iberia
With Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) effectively being a European hub for South America, Iberia realizes how vital Latin America’s marketplace is to its business. With this in mind, from April 2022, it will add five additional flights to Mexico City International Airport (MEX). From April, Madrid will link to the Mexican capital with 19 weekly flights in each direction.
After having finally lifted its COVID-19 restrictions on flights arriving from Europe, Colombia will have two daily flights between Madrid and Bogota starting in February. In addition, starting next month, Iberia will fly from Madrid to Cali.
Flights between Madrid and the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires will also increase with four more weekly frequencies. From April to July, Iberia has scheduled 12 weekly flights between Madrid and Buenos Aires, which will increase to 14 during August and 13 in September and October.
The USA is a crucial market for Iberia
Even before the United States lifted travel restrictions earlier this month, Iberia planned to offer flights to all the destinations it served pre-COVID-19. For summer 2022, Iberia will offer 14 flights per week between the Spanish capital and New York City which are four more frequencies a week than it flys now. There will also be two flights a day to Miami, an increase of four more flights than the currently operating number.
Iberia to fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Starting in March and lasting until October, Chicago will grow from five flights per week to seven. Boston will see its frequencies double, going from three flights per week to six. Flights between Madrid and Los Angeles will go from three to five per week and reach six flights per week during August.
In keeping with its oneworld alliance partners, Iberia has a joint agreement with American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair for flights from Europe to Puerto Rico. Starting in April and lasting until August, Iberia will offer five weekly flights between Madrid and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico.
