Finland’s national airline, Finnair says that it wants to be flying to nearly 100 destinations next summer. It is adding new routes from Helsinki to South Korea, Tokyo Haneda in Japan, and Dallas, Texas in the United States. In a company statement released on November 9, 2021, the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL)-based airline said that as the gradual reopening of countries following the coronavirus continues, it will ramp up flights.
Beginning March 27, 2022, Finnair will open new long-haul routes from Finnland to Gimhae International Airport (PUS), Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Finnair also said that for the first time in its history, it would offer flights from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) to New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo, Japan.
Before COVID-19, Japan was Finnair’s largest market
When speaking about Finnair’s big plans for summer in the company statement Finnair Chief Commercial Officer, Ole Orvér, said:
“We look forward to the world continuing opening again, Before the pandemic, Japan was our single largest market outside our home market Finland, and we look forward to returning to all our five destinations in Japan. We are also opening a new route to Busan in South Korea, demonstrating our continuous commitment to offering the best and most sustainable connections between Europe and Asia via our Helsinki hub.”
“We are also pleased to strengthen our network in the US by adding Dallas as a new destination. Our customers will be able to enjoy great connections to other cities in North America through the extensive network of our alliance partner, American Airlines.”

Helsinki to Sapporo is a new route for Finnair
In its statement, Finnair says that it will resume flights to all its five Japanese destinations that it served before the pandemic devastated air travel which are:
- Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)
- Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT)
- Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO)
- Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX)
- Fukuoka Airport (FUK)
For the summer of 2022, Finnair plans to offer 40 flights from Helsinki to the five destinations in Japan it served before COVID-19. If travel restrictions allow, Finnair will offer daily flights from Helsinki to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT). Finnair will also offer daily flights from Helsinki to Nagoya Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) and Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX). From June, Finnair will offer two flights a day between Helsinki and Osaka. Meanwhile, Fukuoka Airport (FUK) in Southern Japan will get three flights a week from Helsinki. The summer will also see the introduction of Finnair’s Helsinki to Sapporo route, with the Nordic airline offering two frequencies per week.
Finnair is focused on Asia
Focusing on connecting Asian megacities with Europe, Finnair offers daily flights to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore. Starting in June, Finnair will connect Europe with a daily flight to Delhi in India. The flights to South Korea’s second most populous city, Busan, will commence in March with the weekly flights from Helsinki.
While working in tandem with its codeshare partner American Airlines, Finnair fly’s to New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Starting February 7, 2021, Finnair will offer a new service to American Airlines mega hup at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The flights between Helsinki and Dallas will operate four times per week.
