In a statement released on November 2, 2021, American multinational conglomerate logistics and shipping company FedEx Express said it plans to open a new hub at Dubai World Central Airport (DCW). The world’s largest express delivery service signed an agreement with Dubai South to build a new regional hub in the Logistics District.
Located near the Dubai World Central Airport (DWC), the new facility will feature state-of-the-art technology to support the company’s regional and global networks. FedEx says that the new hub will increase operational efficiencies to meet the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA) region’s growing demand.
FedEx sees Dubai as an ideal place to have a hub
The agreement was signed in the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, by the executive chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation HE Khalifa Alzaffin, and the regional president of FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa region Jack Muhs.
The signing ceremony took place at the ‘Hypermotion Dubai’ at the World Expo’s Dubai Exhibition Center, focusing on next-generation mobility and logistics. According to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Middle East saw cargo volumes in August increase by 15.4% when compared to the same month a year earlier.
When speaking about the agreement in the FedEx statement, FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa, Jack Muhs said:
“With increasing trade needs within the region and globally, the ideal location of the hub and our advanced technology solutions will allow us to grow and strengthen our presence in the MEISA region and beyond. Dubai continues to be the heart of our regional operations. The new cutting-edge hub at Dubai South is in line with our commitment to build a network for what’s next and stay one step ahead of our customers’ requirements.”
The hub will be a modern facility
When speaking about the new facility, Murs listed its attributes as being:
- Sustainable with operations and energy use
- An automated and advanced sorting system
- High-speed security screening equipment
- Cold-chain services
- Capable of handling dangerous goods
When adding his thoughts to the FedEx statement executive chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South HE Khalifa Alzaffin said:
“We are delighted to be helping FedEx expand its regional operations with our optimal operational solutions, bespoke services, and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The mega logistic player’s presence will further consolidate our global position as the preferred choice for industry players seeking to operate in an integrated, economic environment, where they would connect with international markets through a multi-modal platform.”

About the Dubai World Central (DWC)
Also known as Al Maktoum International Airport, DCW is an international airport located in Jebel Ali, 23 miles south of Dubai. The airport is the central part of the Dubai South residential, commercial, and logistics center. When the building is fully completed in 2027, the free economic zone will feature transport modes, logistics, and added features such as manufacturing and assembly facilities.
Linked to the existing Dubai International Airport (DXB) by a high-speed rail system, as well as being served by the Dubai Metro, the airport will feature the following:
- Three passenger terminals, including one dedicated to Emirates, the second to other carriers, and the third to low-cost carriers
- Multiple concourses
- Executive and royal jet centers
- Hotels and shopping malls
- Support and maintenance facilities on all aircraft, including the Airbus A380
