Emirates and airBaltic have signed a new codeshare agreement, allowing passengers of both airlines to buy combined tickets to avail of the other carrier’s network. The move comes after airBaltic started flying to Dubai in September, and means that you could now fly between Riga and the world with much more ease.
It’s easy to focus on the orders placed at airshows. After all, Airbus topped its 2019 Dubai Airshow orders with a single order on the first day of this year’s show. However, airshows also allow industry professionals to come together and network. This was certainly the case for airBaltic and Emirates this year.
A new codeshare agreement
At the recent Dubai Airshow, held last week, airBaltic’s CEO Martin Gauss met up with the Chief Commerical Officer of Emirates, Adnan Kazim. The topic of discussion was how the airlines could work together to benefit both of their customers.

Following the discussions, a new codeshare agreement was signed between the two airlines, positively impacting passengers from both airlines. Emirates passengers will now be able to access enhanced connectivity in the Baltics. Emirates will place its EK code on the Airbus A220 flight from Dubai to Riga and also on connecting flights from Riga to Tallin, Vilnius, and Helsinki.
For the time being, the partnership is also reasonably limited from Dubai, with the BT code being placed on Emirates flights from Dubai to Bangkok and Jakarta. Passengers can, of course, reach further destinations by traveling with Emirates, with Gauss commenting,
“The new partnership will enable our passengers to reach new exciting destinations in Asia, Australia and beyond.”
Another codeshare for Emirates
The new codeshare signed with airBaltic is just another one to add to the group for Emirates. As things currently stand, Emirates has codeshare agreements in place with 22 other airlines. Meanwhile, two rail companies also codeshare with the Dubai-based giant. In addition, the airline also has interline agreements with another 115+ airlines and rail companies.
According to aviation data experts Cirium, Emirates has codeshare flights operational with the following 20 airlines in November,

- B6 – JetBlue
- CM – Copa
- CZ – China Southern
- FZ – flydubai
- G3 – GOL
- JL- Japan Airlines
- JQ – Jetstar Airways

- MH – Malaysia Airlines
- MK – Air Mauritius
- PG – Bangkok Airways
- QF – Qantas
- S7 – S7
- SA – South African Airways
- TG – Thai Airways
- TP – TAP Air Portugal
- WS – Westjet
But what is the difference between a codeshare flight and an interline flight? As far as the passenger is concerned, not much. An interline flight means that passengers can travel with different airlines on the same itinerary and check their baggage through to the end.
With codeshare flights, the flight will be operated on behalf of the other carrier. So, in this case, airBaltic will operate the Riga to Dubai flight on behalf of Emirates. That means that a passenger connecting from Riga to Frankfurt via Dubai would only fly on Emirates tickets instead of an airBaltic ticket and an Emirates ticket.
