Lufthansa Technik intends to showcase its EXPLORER VIP cabin design at the Dubai Airshow and has given us a sneak peek of what to expect in the meantime. An Airbus A330 has been chosen for the design. A cargoesque door at the front of the aircraft is more than it seems, revealing a hidden sundeck.
Earlier this year, Lufthansa Technik revealed that it was working on a new luxury private jet cabin concept known as EXPLORER. At the time, few details were revealed, but the company did tout an internal rendering, suggesting that images could be displayed on the ceiling.
A look at the concept
Today, Lufthansa Technik gave us a closer look at what to expect from the Airbus A330 VIP concept ahead of the Dubai Airshow. The most notable aspect is the addition of a cargo door at the front of the jet. You may be wondering why such an aircraft would have a cargo door for the upper deck? When it opens, it reveals an extending balcony that can be used as a sundeck.
The aircraft also features an incredible ceiling that can rapidly adapt to the situation. Fancy a nightclub atmosphere? Press a button. Maybe a bit more class is needed for a meeting? Press a button. Want to feel like you’re inside an aquarium? There’s also a button for that.
The ceiling uses projection technology to adapt to the moment’s needs, with small projectors placed in the sidewalls and ceiling elements and calibrated to create a seamless display.
A luxury holiday home?
With the concept, it seems as though Lufthansa Technik is trying to change the function of the VIP jetliner. Currently, such aircraft are typically used to fly from A to B, though this aircraft could be used as a holiday home, stopping in a different city each night. The design mockup contains a bar, a vast lounge area, three bedrooms with double beds, a gym/emergency flying hospital room, countless showers, and a garage below the main deck.
The aircraft has been designed to accommodate 12 VIPs. However, it is possible to adapt the design to include more seating for crew and additional guests.

According to Lufthansa Technik, the design is supposed to build on the current trend for superyachts, hence the decision to launch the concept at the Monaco yacht show. Commenting on the concept, Wieland Timm, Head of Sales VIP & Special Mission Aircraft Services at Lufthansa Technik, said,
“In yacht building, multifunctional exploration vessels have now become a class in their own right… For this fast-growing target group of VIP world explorers, we have therefore now created a flying platform for the first time. Unlike a yacht, however, our EXPLORER aircraft allows passengers to travel to the other side of the globe within hours…”
