A new route to Ukraine

Qatar Airways announced today it would start flying to Odesa, its second destination in Ukraine, on 9th December. Flights will run as follows:

  • Flight QR309 from Doha (DOH) to Odesa (ODS) departs at 08:30 and arrives at 12:45
  • Flight QR310 from Odesa (ODS) to Doha (DOH) departs at 16:45 arrives and arrives at 22:50

The route will run three times weekly, each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

All flights will be operated by Qatar Airways’ Airbus A320 aircraft featuring 12 seats in Business Class and 120 seats in Economy Class.

The Chief Executive of Qatar Airways Group, His Excellency Mr Akbar Al Baker, marked the news by saying:

“We have been operating to the Ukraine since August 2017 and our launch to Odesa marks a milestone in our history with the country. Odesa is rightly known as the pearl of the Black Sea and we look forward to bringing visitors from around the world to explore its rich cultural history as well as further afield along the coast and inland in the south west of Ukraine.

It is not all about inbound travel

More importantly, Qatar is also counting on much outbound travel from Odesa. The city is already served year-round by flydubai and Turkish Airlines. Now, Qatar wants a piece of this market too.

With flights to more than 85 destinations in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East, passengers wanting to travel to or from Odesa will now also be able to do so via Hamad International Airport.

Qatar Airways will offer a competitive product: its new baggage allowances range from 25 kg in Economy Class split over two pieces and 40 kg split over two pieces in Business Class.

Thus, Mr Al Baker also said:

“Equally we are excited to offer leisure travellers from Ukraine access to our expanding network such as our Indian Ocean winter sun destinations including the Maldives, the Seychelles and Zanzibar. The route will also connect Ukrainians with friends and family across the globe from Sydney, Dubai and Bangkok.”

Aviation in Ukraine is booming

Unrelated to Qatar’s route announcement, Ukraine has seen a flurry of new route launches recently after the country signed an open skies agreement with the European Union last week.

Not even one day after the agreement was signed, Wizz Air reacted with a major expansion of its operations in Ukraine as it announced it would base an additional seven aircraft in the country by summer 2022 and that it would launch an incredible 26 new routes from four Ukrainian cities, including Odesa.

Odesa also saw Bees Airline, the Ukrainian startup, launching flights from Odesa to Prague last week.
