Multiple Passengers Fall Ill On Corendon Boeing 737 Flight To Greece

On October 1st, 2021, a Corendon Airlines Europe flight was heading to Rhodes, Greece from Cologne, Germany, when multiple passengers fainted on board. The Boeing 737-800 was leveling off after its climb when the first of the passengers became unconscious. These collapses appear to be due to a ventilation failure.

A series of falls

Registration 9H-TJE was conducting flight XR-1050 with 180 people on board. According to The Aviation Herald, a woman fell out of the aft lavatory at FL370, near the German city of Ingolstadt, due to becoming unconscious.

This fall was followed by the collapsing of a male passenger in one of the aft seat rows. A doctor and nurse that happened to be on board started to provide first aid to the sick passengers before additional travelers started to collapse.

The cabin’s air conditioning was soon reconfigured and the passengers began to recover. The 737 then made it onto Rhodes for a safe landing.

A word from the airline

Corendon has shared further details about the on board illnesses. Initial reports suggested that five passengers were sick, but the airline states that only four people were affected.

“Only 4 passengers felt unwell. Cabin Crew immediately took necessary actions for those 4 passengers in compliance with Cabin First Aid Procedure during flight. A doctor and a nurse were on the aircraft and made promptly medical intervention to the passengers feeling unwell but they could not found any serious symptoms. The doctor did not recommend the crew to divert and he did not use aircraft medical kit which was made available for him during his assistance,” Air Corendon shared, as reported by The Aviation Herald.

“We also would like to inform you that after the relevant occurrence; maintenance records, recorded parameters of subject flight thru FDM (flight data monitoring), and crew reports etc. have been analyzed by our maintenance and safety departments and no abnormal parameter which might cause the occurrence has been found. On the return flight of same aircraft from Rhodes to Cologne (CXI-1051) with 184 pax, no similar complaint has been received. Kindly note that a report of the occurrence was notified to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malta.”

Ventilation issues are rare but they can happen. For instance, in May 2019, we reported that an Air France flight operated by Joon had to make an emergency landing in Iran while on the way to Mumbai from Paris. This move was due to ventilation issues on the Airbus A340.

More about Corendon

Incidentally, Simple Flying flew on 9H-TJE just last month. This was the aircraft involved in October 1st’s ventilation incident. The plane was delivered to Corendon just this June before flying with SpiceJet and Jet Airways.

Corendon Airlines Europe was founded in 2017. The charter airline is a sister company of Corendon Airlines and Corendon Dutch Airlines. Overall, the Turkish leisure carrier traces its roots back to 2004.

The company is expanding rapidly across Europe, looking to operate over 45 flights per week from five British airports to Turkey and Greece next summer. The airline will be keen to avoid any further ventilation issues heading into 2022.

Simple Flying reached out to Corendon for comment on this report. We will update the article with any further announcements from the airline.
