Iberia Recovers To Pre-Crisis Capacity In Colombia

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD)-based Iberia says it has recovered to pre-COVID-19 capacity on flights between Spain and Colombia. The South American nation was one of the first countries in the region to lift COVID-19 travel restrictions. Spain also opened its doors to Colombian tourists providing they were fully vaccinated.

Traffic between Colombia and the Spanish capital Madrid increased after the lifting of restrictions. Now, the Spanish national flag carrier plans to move from seven to ten weekly frequencies this month. In a statement released on October 25, 2021, Iberia said that it would offer ten weekly flights between Madrid and Colombia’s capital Bogota starting in November.

On the 4,991 mile route, Iberia will deploy one of its nine state-of-the-art Airbus A350 aircraft. Starting a month later in December, Iberia plans to fly from Madrid to Cali three times a week using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

When speaking about Spain to Colombia flights during the ALTA forum attended by representatives of all Latin American airlines Iberia’s commercial director, network development and alliances Maria Jesús López-Solás, said:

“We celebrate 75 years flying to Latin America and betting on this region, in the good times and the not so good ones. Colombia is a market of enormous importance for us, where we have maintained connectivity throughout the pandemic. Now our goal is to stimulate traffic to Europe by recovering the same capacity that we offered before COVID. There is a latent demand, which is eager to travel again, and we have already shown that health measures can be reconciled with the recovery of the air sector, so vital for the economy of any country.”
