About Copa Airlines

Compañía Panameña de Aviación, hence the acronym COPA, was founded on June 21, 1944, and started operations on August 15, 1947. A group of Panamanian businessmen started the airline with the help of Pan American World Airways, which had a 32% stake in the new startup. The airline began operations with a small fleet of Douglas DC-3 aircraft performing domestic flights. In the 1970s, Copa Airlines expanded with international flights to cities in the region while facing stiff competition from Air Panamá Internacional.

When Copa Airlines acquired its first jet, a Boeing 737-100, in 1980, it discontinued flying domestically and increased its list of international destinations. With its headquarters in Panama City, Copa Airlines is the owner and operator of Colombian airline AeroRepública, commonly known as Copa Airlines Colombia. Both airlines are in the Star Alliance network.
