Which Airport’s Runways Are Furthest From The Terminal?

As airports grow over the years, some of the newly built runways may be far away from the terminal, making for lengthy taxiing operations upon landing. But, which airports runways are furthest from the terminals? Let’s investigate further.

Amsterdam’s Polderbaan runway 18R-36L

The Polderbaan 18R-36L is Amsterdam Schiphol’s longest, newest, and most remote runway. The airport authorities introduced this runway in 2003. It measures 12,467 feet in length (3,800 meters). That’s 300 meters longer than Schiphol’s second-longest runway, Kaagbaan, and plans for its construction have been available since 1967.

Because Polderbaan was the sixth runway built for Schiphol, it is not close to the airport’s terminals. In fact, it is five kilometers away from the terminal, which can lead to taxi times of 15 minutes and more.

Denver’s Runway 8

Like Amsterdam, Denver International Airport has six runways. These are the 7/25, the 8/26, the 16L/34R, the 16R/34L, the 17L/35R, and the 17R/35L. Five of them measure 12,000 feet (3,658 meters), and 16R/34L measures 16,000 feet (4,877 meters).

Denver’s Runway 8 is 3.53 kilometers away from the Jeppesen Terminal and its three concourses. Likewise, the 7/25 is more than three kilometers away from Denver’s terminal. Despite these two runways being far from the terminal, Denver International Airport had an average taxiing of 15.4 minutes for departing operations and 8.2 minutes for incoming flights, according to Planestats.com.

Frankfurt’s 07L/25R

Coming back to Europe, Frankfurt International Airport also has a runway situated far away from the terminal.

We’re talking about Frankfurt’s 9,186 feet (2,800 meters) long runway 07L/25R. It sits beyond the A3 freeway, and it is approximately 3.1 kilometers away from Frankfurt’s terminal.

07L/25 recently opened in 2011, and it is used only for landings. In 2020, it was also used to store aircraft during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Honolulu’s Reef Runway

We go back to the United States to see a couple more examples. The first one is Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. This hub has the offshore runway 8W/26W, also named Reef Runway. This strip is 12,001 feet long (3,658 meters).

According to our research, the Reef Runway is 2.93 kilometers away from the airport’s terminal.

How about Atlanta’s runways?

Despite what you might expect, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport’s runways are not that further away from the terminal. The fifth runway, better known as 10/28 (which turned 15 years old in May), is only 2.19 kilometers away from Concourse C.

The runway 10/28 is of great importance to Atlanta’s Airport. Back in 2016, it averaged more than 100,000 landings and takeoffs a year. Plus, it saved the airline industry approximately US$260 million annually in delay costs.

Finally, Chicago O’Hare International Airport has eight runways. Despite the number of strips it has, they’re not as far away from the hub’s five terminals as the previous examples. For instance, 10R/28L is less than two kilometers away from Terminals 2 and 3.
