Southwest Airlines is significantly boosting its presence in Austin, Texas, next year. The Dallas-based airline is resuming and/or launching nine routes from the Texan capital in March. The news comes as Southwest locks in its schedules until the end of April 2022.
In addition to more Austin flights, Southwest Airlines is boosting flights to Hawaii, resuming a seasonal daily nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), and commencing between Denver and Cozumel (Mexico) and Albuquerque and Burbank.
Despite Southwest Airlines recently confirming it was experiencing a softness in bookings and increased trip cancelations, the airline continues to boost capacity and restore its network to pre-pandemic levels.
Over one hundred Southwest departures a day from Austin by March 2022
Fast-growing Austin is proving a juicy destination for Southwest. With a population of nearly one million, the business-friendly city is attracting entrepreneurs, startups, and tech companies in droves. Southwest says it has been the largest airline flying into Austin for over three decades.
The airline plans to increase its Austin services in mid-March 2022 by more than 20 flights a day, offering nonstop flights between Austin and nine new and returning destinations. In addition, Southwest will add additional frequencies on routes already served from Austin. In total, Southwest will offer nonstop services to 46 destinations from Austin with up to 105 departures a day.
Commencing March 10, Southwest will begin or resume nonstop flights from Austin to Amarillo (Texas), Charleston (South Carolina), Columbus (Ohio), Midland/Odessa (Texas), and Ontario (California).
Two days later, on March 12, Southwest Airlines will launch flights between Austin and Panama City Beach (Florida), Sarasota/Bradenton (Florida), Destin/Fort Walton Beach (Florida), and Puerto Vallarta (Mexico). Southwest notes the flights to Puerto Vallarta are subject to final government approval.
“We’re celebrating a growing Customer base in Central Texas with this major investment designed specifically for Austin’s business and leisure travelers,” said Dave Harvey, Southwest’s Vice President of Southwest Business. “As we continue to strengthen our network in Austin, customers will see more flights on key routes as well as new destinations across our map.”

Hawaii will also see improved Southwest frequencies
Southwest Airlines is also ramping up its services to Hawaii in February. Beginning February 17, 2022, Southwest is increasing flights on six routes to Hawaii. The Phoenix – Honolulu route will increase to two daily services. San Diego and Kona will see one daily return service. The Sacramento – Kona route will see four return flights a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays).
Maui will also see two return daily flights from San Diego. One daily return trip will operate between San Jose (California) and Lihue. Finally, Southwest will operate daily return flights between Sacramento and Maui, with double daily flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Away from Texas and Hawaii, three more Southwest routes are starting early next year. Starting January 17, 2022, Southwest’s schedule will include a nonstop service between Albuquerque and Burbank, giving passengers traveling between New Mexico and the San Fernando Valley a faster journey.
Subject to government approvals, Southwest Airlines will resume a seasonal daily nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) on February 17. Finally, on March 12, Southwest plans to start seasonal nonstop service on Saturdays between Denver and Cozumel (Mexico).
Southwest advises these flights are now loaded into the schedules and available for sale.
