LATAM Looks To Rebuild Its European Network

Chilean-Brazilian multinational airline LATAM expects to rebuild its European network in the fourth quarter of 2021. The South American airline says that it expects to be operating more than 50% of its pre-COVID-19 route network before the end of the year.

LATAM says that following the recent lifting of restrictions, the airline will resume several direct flights between Europe and Brazil in a statement released today. Last month the Brazilian government eased COVID-19 restrictions after seeing a sharp decline in people becoming infected with the coronavirus.

More flights between São Paulo and Europe

As Europe pushes ahead with its COVID-19 vaccination drive, LATAM says it will speed up the return of direct flights between Europe and Brazil in October and December 2021. Flights from Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (MAD) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) will expand in frequency.

Starting in October, LATAM will go from three to four flights a week from Madrid and Paris to São Paulo. In November, LATAM will also offer three flights per week to São Paulo from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Also, in November, LATAM will fly six times a week to São Paulo from Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Portugal and four times per week from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Germany.

LATAM will resume flights between São Paulo (Guarulhos) and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) in Italy from December. LATAM says that all the flights mentioned above are now bookable through latam.com and various other sales channels.

More people want to travel

When speaking about the resumption of flights between Europe and Brazil in the company statement LATAM Managing Director Europe Thibaud Morand said:

“We have seen a steady growth in the interest of Europeans and Brazilians for international travel, mainly between countries open to those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That is why we are constantly evaluating the possibility of resuming or expanding our operations from the European markets where we operate.”

Details of the new frequencies

  • France: Starting in October, LATAM will offer four flights a week between PCD and GRU.
  • Spain: Starting in October, LATAM will offer four flights a week between MAD and GRU. Starting in November, LATAM will offer three flights a week between BCN and GRU.
  • Portugal: Currently, LATAM offers four flights a week between LIS and GRU on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. From November, two more frequencies will be added to compliment the existing flights.
  • Germany: Currently, LATAM offers three flights a week between FRA and GRU. In November, two more flights a week will be added.
  • Italy: From December, LATAM will offer three flights per week between MXP and GRU.

LATAM says that all flights between São Paulo / Guarulhos and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) remain on hold.

While it is nice to see LATAM upping the number of flights between Brazil and Europe, people who are considering traveling to Brazil from Europe have to realize that only 29.1% of Brazilians have been vaccinated. The more contagious Delta variant in the US and Europe is not yet in Brazil and has experts worried that the lifting of restrictions may be a little premature.
