Starting this month, Spanish national flag carrier Iberia will increase the frequency of its flights between Spain and Mexico. Because Mexico does not require any COVID-19 proof of vaccination and Spain allows visitors who have evidence, Iberia has seen an interest in demand for seats between the two Spanish-speaking nations.
Also sparking the decision to increase the number of flights is a distribution agreement with Aeromexico that gives Iberia access to 40 cities in Mexico such as Monterrey, Cancun, Guadalajara, Acapulco or San Luis Potosí, among others. Likewise, Aeromexico customers can use Iberia to fly to the 90 destinations that the airline offers in Europe. On the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (MAD) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX), Iberia will deploy one of its nine Airbus A350-900 aircraft.
14 flights per week between MAD and MEX
Iberia has always been committed to serving Mexico, and as demand increases, the IAG-owned airline will offer 14 flights a week starting in September. The frequency increase also coincides with a fare campaign with each way fares starting from 208 euros (MXN 4,920).
The schedule of the daily flights between Madrid-Mexico City are:
- Iberia flight number IB6403 will depart Madrid at 13:20 and arrive in Mexico City at 17:55
- Iberia flight number IB6409 will depart Madrid at 23:55 and arrive in Mexico City at 04:30 the next day
- Iberia flight number IB6400 will depart Mexico City at 12:10 and arrive in Madrid at 06:00 the next day
- Iberia flight number IB6402 will depart Mexico City at 20:05 and arrive in Madrid at 13:55 the next day
Iberia has been flying to Mexico for 71 years
When speaking in an Iberia statement released on August 31, 2021, Director of LATAM Sales and Institutional Agreements Victor Moneo said:
“This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our flights to Latin America, and in the case of Mexico, our first flight dates back to 1950. Since then, our commitment to this strategic market – both from the point of view of tourism and business traffic – it remains intact. We are confident that these 14 weekly flights will help energize the market. In addition, a country as extensive as Mexico and with important tourist and economic centers beyond the country’s capital needs to have a distribution network within the country, and this has been achieved thanks to the distribution agreement with Aeroméxico. Our commitment is also consolidated by operating this route with the most advanced and silent aircraft on the market, the Airbus A-350/900, whose fleet we make available to customers to offer them the best product we have.”
Iberia Airbus A350s have 348 seats
Iberia first deployed its flagship Airbus A350s on the Madrid-Mexico City route in June of 2020. The aircraft is configured in three classes with 348 seats made up of:
- 31 business class seats
- 24 premium economy class seats
- 293 economy class seats
Passengers who fly with Iberia to Mexico will enjoy the A350s feeling of more significant space with wide corridors and high ceilings. The A350 also features hi-speed WiFi, panoramic windows, and an air ventilation system that improves humidity levels between 11% and 16%.
