Free COVID-19 vaccines at Ljubljana Airport

Fraport Slovenija, the operator of Slovenia’s only airport with scheduled flights, is offering completely free COVID-19 vaccination to all passengers and the general public.

The vaccine on offer is the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine, which is administered as a single-dose vaccine. Thus, if you participate in this scheme, you will be fully vaccinated while you, for example, wait for your flight to depart.

No advance booking is needed – you only have to show up at the Covid point in Terminal A of Ljubljana Airport (LJU). The Airport is offering the scheme in cooperation with the Health Institute Zdravje.

The scheme started this week, Monday 9th August, and it operates under the following schedule:

  • Mondays from 09:00 to 12:00
  • Wednesdays 11:00 to 14:00
  • Fridays from 17:00 to 20:00

Any European Union member state resident is eligible to participate because you only need to present your European Health Insurance Card and an ID to get vaccinated. Slovenian citizens need not present the EHIC because Slovenia’s own Slovenian Unique Master Citizen Number will suffice.

Upon arrival, you will answer a health questionnaire and then undergo a health interview with the medical staff.

A health measure at Ljubljana Airport

Ljubljana Airport has presented this scheme as a health measure, stating that it is doing it to play its part in fulfilling the RVT conditions of responsible international travel. RVT stands for recovered, vaccinated, or tested.

The airport said:

“Ljubljana Airport is well prepared for the safe reception of passengers and the safe work of employees, as safety is our most important priority. We have introduced a number of preventive protection measures, for which we have also obtained an AHA (Airport Health Accreditation) certificate from the International Council of Airports (ACI), which confirms that we provide safe conditions for passengers and employees.”

Low traffic figures at Ljubljana Airport

One of the reasons why Ljubljana Airport is able to offer this highly generous and efficient scheme to all European Union residents is that it is currently handling a relatively low volume of traffic.

In what is one of the world’s worst aviation performances in the six months between January and June 2021, Slovenia reached just 8.9% of the passenger traffic it had in the same period in 2019. The total number of passengers in all of Slovenia was just 70,011 in the first half (H1) of this year.

The reasons for this are:
