The Boeing 777-300ER is one of the most successful widebody aircraft for Boeing. According to the North American OEM, it has received 879 gross orders for this model since its rollout in 2002. At its peak, a new B777-300ER was valued at US$150 million but, how much is it worth now?
What’s the current status of the 777-300ER?
Like many widebody aircraft, the B777-300ER has suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. According to ch-aviation’s database, currently, there are 655 B777-300ER active worldwide, operating with 41 airlines. Meanwhile, 167 aircraft from 27 carriers are registered as inactive at the moment. Finally, only three worldwide have been scrapped.
Emirates is the model biggest operator, with 124 aircraft. Of these total, 118 are active and six inactive. Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways both have 48, while Air France has 43.
According to Boeing’s website, the company still has to deliver 11 B777-300ERs. The Russian carrier Aeroflot will receive two; Pakistan International Airline will receive five; while the lessor BOC Aviation Limited will have three more aircraft of this model. There’s one unidentified customer with one plane on order.
What’s the value of the 777-300ER at the moment?
It is difficult to pinpoint a standard price for a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft at the moment. The value of an aircraft goes down with age, but as we’ve established, it peaked at US$150 million.
Let’s see a few examples.
First, let’s see the value of the first B777-300ER ever delivered. Its registration is F-GSQA, and it operates with Air France. The aircraft is 17.59 years old. Its current market value is US$30.1 million, according to ch-aviation and Collateral Verifications LLC.
Qatar Airways has several B777-300ER, including one registered as A7-BAA. This plane is 13.76 years old; Qatar received it in November 2007, and it is expected to retire in 2023. Its current market value, according to ch-aviation and Collateral Verifications LLC, is nearly US$39 million.
Now, let’s see the value of a B777-300ER delivered in the last two years. British Airways received the G-STBM aircraft in October 2020. It is less than a year old. According to ch-aviation, its current market value is US$99.5 million.
Therefore, we can say that the value of the B777-300ER ranges from US$30 million to US$100 million.
A brief history of the 777-300ER
Boeing rolled out the B777-300ER in 2002, a few years after launching its shorter-range brother, the B777-300. The OEM delivered the first unit in April 2004 to Air France.
The B777-300ER has been the most successful airplane from the 777 family. For example, the B777-200 only had 139 gross orders; the B777-200ER had 464 orders; meanwhile, the B777-200LR only had 62, and the B777-300 had 71 orders.
So far, the B777X has accumulated 361 gross orders. It will be interesting to see if this newer model can surpass the success that was the 777-300ER. In financial terms, that’s an entirely different discussion, and the B777X is already in a tough spot due to the many problems the program has faced.
Going back to the Boeing 777-300ER, the aircraft was a late boomer, as reported by CAPA.
This plane had its two record years of sales in 2007 and 2011. Nevertheless, some of its operators came later, like SWISS, United, and Kuwait Airways; these three airlines received their first units in 2016.
