Avelo Takes On The East Coast With Four New Routes To Florida

Avelo Airlines has officially announced the initial routes from its base in Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). Using a Boeing 737, the airline plans on flying to four cities in Florida starting in November. This puts the airline’s launch just in time for the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons and perfectly positioned for winter-weary leisure travelers looking for a low-cost way to make it down to sunny Florida.

Tweed-New Haven Airport will become Avelo’s first East Coast base. Starting November 3rd, Avelo will bring its low-cost service to the airport to four destinations in Florida: Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Fort Myers. This is the largest service expansion at HVN in over 30 years.

Avelo will run a one-time ceremonial inaugural flight between New Haven and Orlando on November 3rd. The aircraft will depart HVN at 11:00 and arrive at Orlando International Airport (MCO) at 13:55. The return flight will leave MCO at 14:35 and arrive in New Haven at 17:15.

Regularly scheduled commercial flights to MCO will run from November 4th. Flights will depart HVN at 07:30 and arrive in MCO at 10:25. The return flight will depart MCO at 11:05 and arrive in HVN at 13:45. Roundtrip flights between New Haven and Orlando will run on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

On November 8th, Avelo will start nonstop flights to Tampa International Airport (TPA). Flights will depart HVN at 14:30 and arrive in TPA at 17:35. The return flight will depart TPA at 18:15 and arrive at 21:00. The flights to Tampa will run on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Finally, on November 11th, Avelo will inaugurate flights to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers. Flights will depart New Haven at 14:30 and arrive in Fort Myers at 17:50. The return flight will depart RSW at 18:30 and arrive in New Haven at 21:25. Flights will run on Thursdays and Sundays.

All times in the above schedules are local. Avelo will use a Boeing 737-700 on all flights from HVN. This plane seats 147 passengers in a single-class configuration.

All four of these routes are to key vacation destinations that have boomed during the crisis. Americans have flocked to Florida amid ongoing travel restrictions that have shut off parts of the world for travel. One-way fares on these routes start at $59.

Avelo adds its first East Coast base

Avelo Airlines inaugurated operations on April 28th, 2021, from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in the Los Angeles area. The carrier later announced that it was planning on turning Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport into its East Coast base.

New Haven has minimal air service at the moment. Only American Airlines flies into the airport. Those flights run under the carrier’s American Eagle regional banner.

Avelo’s CEO Andrew Levy stated the following on the new routes:

“We’re excited to bring more choice, everyday low fares and the Avelo Soul of Service to Connecticut. Connecticut residents told us they want more convenient and affordable options for flying to Florida and we listened. These four popular sun-soaked destinations are an ideal winter retreat. The refreshingly simple and smooth HVN small-airport experience will ensure our Customers depart relaxed and ready for some fun in the sun.”

As part of Avelo’s arrival at the airport, it will commit to invest $1.2 million to upgrade and modernize facilities at the airport. This is part of the overall $100 million project for a new terminal and extended runway planned for HVN.

Tweed-New Haven Airport

Located in southern Connecticut, New Haven’s airport is often overshadowed by many area airports. This includes New York’s LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airports, Westchester County Airport (HPN), and Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Hartford, Connecticut.

A convenient gateway for much of southern Connecticut, New Haven also can attract a larger array of customers. New York City-area airports are not well-known for major low-cost services. Meanwhile, Hartford receives much attention and service from low-cost point-to-point carriers like Breeze Airways and Spirit Airlines.

HVN may also have a lot of opportunities for Avelo in the future. After it launches, Avelo will become HVN’s largest airline. With the terminal and infrastructure improvements planned, the airline could be set for even more growth that will benefit Southern Connecticut’s population and the state as a whole – including Yale’s students looking to get away from the cold when it comes time to take a break from school.

Avelo will have an uphill battle against some of the more well-known carriers in the region, but it will certainly have a significant opportunity at New Haven. This could be especially rewarding for an airport that has seen very little new air service in the last few years as many of its area peers have received new flights.
