AirAsia Reaches 100% Employee Vaccination Rate

AirAsia has reached the milestone of 100% vaccination of its employees, with all operating crew and frontline staff having received the jab. Additionally, AirAsia has implemented several contactless safety and hygiene measures. The low-cost Asian carrier sees widespread vaccination as a key component of opening up international travel markets.

100% vaccination for operating crew and frontline staff

AirAsia has vaccinated 100% of its crew and frontline employees in the fight against COVID. The airline has also announced additional safety and hygiene measures, including contactless check-ins, onboard and ground PPE, temperature scans and deep cleans, giving passengers ‘360-degree peace of mind.’

AirAsia CEO, Tony Fernandes, said,

“We are ready to fly, and as part of our strict safety policy, we are mandating that all of our operating crew and frontline staff serving guests, including pilots, cabin crew and airport staff, are fully vaccinated to return to work.”

Many airlines globally are following a similar strategy, including Qatar Airways, which reached the 100% milestone this month. Other airlines are in the process of doing so, including SWISS, which is aiming for 100% vaccination status by November.

Enhances hygiene and safety measures

Many experts have warned that vaccination alone is not enough to combat the spread of COVID. In recent weeks, authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have confirmed that vaccinated individuals can still spread the virus, particularly the Delta variant.

As such, AirAsia will implement a range of procedures to improve hygiene and safety.

This includes:

  • Contactless payment and check-in
  • Automated bag drop facilities
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff
  • Regular deep cleaning
  • Online medical document verification
  • HEPA filters on all aircraft

AirAsia adds that all ground and onboard staff have been fully trained in safety and hygiene procedures. The airline is also in the process of integrating its ‘AirAsia Super App’ with the Malaysian government’s MySejahtera digital health app.

Tony Fernandes said,

“We’ve always been about the people and it doesn’t just stop with our own Allstars (employees). With stringent health and hygiene protocols and robust standard operating procedures, guests can be assured of a 360-degree peace of mind when traveling with us again.”

AirAsia plans to resume full operations soon

Due to international travel restrictions and rising COVID cases across Asia, AirAsia decided to cut or suspend operations in early July. One of its subsidiaries, Thai AirAsia, initially suspended flights from 12th-31st July before extending this to all of August, along with deferring or cutting staff pay.

Similarly, AirAsia Indonesia temporarily suspended flights from July 6th to August 6th before extending the suspension by another month. It is still unclear whether the airline plans to resume flights in early September. The carrier has not set a firm date for when operations will resume as normal but promises it is ‘expected in the near future.’

Tony Fernandes added,

“More than 50 countries in the world have begun to welcome vaccinated travelers again. As ASEAN accelerates the vaccination effort, we are hopeful that countries will soon ease travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers for both domestic and international travel and will resume plans for travel bubbles.”
