Spanish national flag carrier Iberia has changed its checked luggage options for people traveling on its flights within Europe. The IAG owned airline says that people traveling light or those worried about the sustainability of air travel now have the option of checking in one bag that weighs no more than 15 kilos (33.06 lbs).
The Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (MAD)-based full-service airline says that it is also lowering the price for a checked bag weighing up to 32 kg (70.54 lbs), and charges for luggage that is overweight will be calculated for each excessive kilo.
Overweight luggage will be charged per kilo
To adapt to each customer’s individual needs, Iberia is offering new checked luggage options on flights within Europe:
- People traveling light or concerned about sustainability can check in one 15 kg bag
- Lower price for a single 32 kg bag
- Overweight charges will now be based on each kilo of weight
- Already operational on flights in Europe booked on Iberia app and website.
Along with the traditional 23-kilo option that starts at €18 ($21.19) per kilo, Iberia says that the price for a checked bag will depend on how much you paid for the ticket. Now customers will have two additional options:
- A 15 kg (33.06 lbs) option for €13 that is dependent on the amount paid for the fare for people who are traveling light and are concerned about their carbon footprint
- A 32 kilo (70.54 lbs) option, which starts at €35 ($41.20) which is a less expensive option than the current overweight charges for luggage weighing more than 23 kg (50.70 lbs)

Iberia is scrapping the €60 fee
Iberia also says that the way it will charge passengers for luggage over the weight allowance will be more precise and cheaper. Passengers will have the option of selecting a checked luggage allowance of either 15, 23, or 32 kilos. Passengers will also no longer have to pay a minimum of €60 ($70.63) for heavier luggage than the allowed limits. They will now be subjected to a new scale of charges of as little as €12 ($14.13) per kilo over the permitted limit.
The rate passengers will pay per kilo also depends on how much they paid for their ticket and applies only when passengers have selected either a 15, 23, or 32-kilo weight option in advance.
In a statement released last week, Iberia says that its new checked baggage limits are only available on domestic and European flights.
The new weight options are also available to passengers traveling on Iberia Express and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum. Iberia says that it is working on making the three weight options available to passengers who buy their tickets from travel agents.
Check your ticket
If your ticket says “Baggage Allowance: 0PC” (zero pieces), it means that your fare does not include free baggage transport in the hold. Baggage Allowance: 1PC” means that your fare includes one free baggage transport in the hold. Also, bear in mind that your baggage allowance may differ from Iberia’s checked luggage policy if you connect with another airline.
Offering three sets of weight limits is good news for people who travel light, as is the scrapping of the €60 minimum payment for overweight bags.
