Eithad officially inaugurated its services to Vienna International Airport from Abu Dhabi International Airport this morning. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner kicked off a twice-weekly service to the capital of Austria with this flight.
Exciting prospects
The 787-9 will fly to Vienna every Thursday and Sunday, giving a capacity of 262 economy and 28 business seats on the trip. Etihad shares that the flights have been timed to arrive in Vienna in the morning to offer passengers a great weekend getaway. The carrier adds that Austria is currently open to nationals and residents, along with residents of Schengen-member states and Switzerland residents, students, and business travelers.
Etihad has been keen to provide services to tourism hotspots this summer. Vienna joins a list of other launches this month.
“After successfully launching Mykonos, Santorini and Malaga earlier in July, we’re delighted to now introducing flights to Vienna,” Etihad Group CEO Tony Douglas shared, as reported by Emirates News Agency.
“The 65th passenger destination to be added to Etihad’s growing network, we are confident that its timeless imperial grandeur and vibrant cultural scene will appeal to many travellers.”
Meanwhile, Vienna Airport joint CEO and COO Julian Jäger adds that his team is delighted with Etihad’s decision to launch regular operations to the site. He notes that the UAE is an important market for tourism in his country. Therefore, this service hints that things are on the right path again for the travel industry.
The route
We previously covered that the flights to Vienna from Abu Dhabi don’t directly return to the UAE. They will instead head to Milan’s Malpensa Airport before landing back in the Middle East. Thus, Etihad is selling three different sets of tickets on this route.
The tickets available are as follows:
- Abu Dhabi to Vienna
- Vienna to Abu Dhabi
- Milan to Abu Dhabi

A popular destination
Etihad isn’t the only UAE-based carrier targeting Austria this summer. flydubai kicked off operations to Salzburg, Austria, this week. This service combines with the resumption of Naples flights later this month to take the low-cost carrier’s network to over 20 nations.
Overall. Vienna is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for a weekend break. The Imperial architecture, historical museums, musical heritage, and world-famous cuisine are enough to have travelers longing to visit Austria’s largest city. Therefore, it’s no surprise that carriers such as Etihad are looking to have a presence at Vienna International Airport as air travel starts to return.
