A cracked windshield saw a Turkish Airlines Boeing divert to New York’s John F Kennedy Airport in the early hours of Monday morning. The Boeing 777 was flying from Los Angles to Istanbul and had crossed over the United States/Canadian border when the incident occurred. The flight went on to land safely in New York.
The decision to divert made two hours into the flight
According to an online post made by HavaSosyalMedya, Turkey’s largest civil aviation online platform, the right cockpit glass of TC-LJI, a five-year-old Boeing 777300ER, cracked. The pilots decided to divert to New York, and passengers and crew were transferred to a hotel to await a later flight.
TC-LJI was operating TK10, the 18:35 departure from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) over to Istanbul Airport (IST). On Sunday, the aircraft was just over two hours into the 13-hour flight when the pilots decided to divert.
According to aircraft tracking site RadarBox.com, TC-LJI had left Los Angeles on Sunday evening and tracked northeast over Utah, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Over five hours into the flight, the Boeing crossed the border and cruised at 29,000 feet. Southwest of Winnipeg, the aircraft made a sharp 180° turn and began heading back towards LAX.
Turkish flight chooses JFK for landing over closer airports
West of Bismark in North Dakota, while maintaining an altitude of 29,000 feet and moving through the night at around 500 knots per hour, TC-LJI veered east and began heading towards New York.
After flying over Minnesota and passing to the north of Minneapolis St Paul International Airport (MSP), the flight overflew Wisconsin and passed to the north of Green Bay. While tracking over Lake Michigan some two hours after pilots first noticed the cracked windscreen, TC-LJI began a sweeping turn to the northeast, looking like it would cross over Lake Huron between Rogers City and Presque Isle.
But before it reached this point, the Boeing turned southeast, passed to the north of Alcona, and crossed into Canadian airspace, overflying Kitchener and Hamilton before passing over the top of Buffalo in upstate New York.

TK10 lands safely in New York
Southeast of Buffalo, near the small town of Hornell, TC-LJI began to gradually lose altitude and airspeed as it closed in on JFK. Over Patterson, while at 19,000 feet, the Boeing 777 headed onto a sharper southeast tracking, overflying Manhatten and JFK Airport. Crossing over the Atlantic coastline at Long Beach, the plane began a sweeping loop over the top of Long Island before touching down safely in New York after six hours in the hour.
HavaSosyalMedya indicates the flight was canceled after landing, and the aircraft would remain in New York pending inspections. This is the first recorded incident involving TC-LJI. New York’s JFK Airport is a key North American airport for Turkish Airlines with onsite support and maintenance facilities. That may explain the pilot’s decision to divert there rather than closer airports. TC-LJI remains on the ground at JFK.
