Former United States President Donald J.Trump says that he is restoring his beautiful Boeing 757 private jet so that he can use it to fly to future rallies. Emblazoned with a large T painted on the tail and TRUMP in capital letters along the fuselage, the plane has been sitting idle at a New York airport since the 45th president took office in 2017.
With Air Force One available to the former president, the 30-year-old Boeing 757-200 was no longer needed by Trump and was left parked up at Stewart International Airport (SWF) 60 miles from Manhattan.
Trump purchased the plane in 2011
Registered in the United States as N757AF, the aircraft was first delivered to Denmark’s Sterling Airways before entering service with Mexico’s TAESA Airlines. In 1995 Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen purchased the plane to use it as a corporate jet. Trump’s DJT Operations I LLC bought the plane from Allen in 2011 and turned it into his toy by lavishly fitting it out with a private bedroom, a mahogany board table, and gold-plated fixtures.
Since being banned from most forms of social media, Trump has decided to get his word out by issuing statements on his website www.donaldjtrump.com. Always titling his message’s “Statement by Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America,” Trump released a statement regarding the plane on Friday that read:
“Many people have asked about the beautiful Boeing 757 that became so iconic during the Trump rallies. It was effectively kept in storage in Upstate New York in that I was not allowed to use it during my presidency. It is now being fully restored and updated and will be put back into service sometime prior to the end of the year. It will soon be brought to a Louisiana service facility for the completion of work, inspection and updating of Rolls-Royce engines, and a brand new paint job. When completed, it will be better than ever and again used at upcoming rallies!”
Trump used the 757 as a campaign tool
After Trump formally announced his candidacy on June 16, 2015, the American reality television star used the plane to jet off to campaign rallies across the country. “Trump Force One” became a promotional ploy featuring prominently as a backdrop behind the stage at his rallies.
The message Trump wanted to send his supporters was, look how successful a businessman I am and think of what I can do for the country if I am elected President.
Why was the plane not sent to the desert?
All aircraft are expensive to maintain and store, which begs the question as to why Trump has left the plane open to the elements in Upstate New York? As we have seen during the pandemic, aircraft that were not being used were sent to warm, dry areas like Arizona and Southern California for storage.
The plane may have been left in New York because it is missing one engine and has the other shrink-wrapped in plastic. The price to get it fixed and airworthy could well reach six figures, which will question whether Trump uses donations from his political supporters to pay for the repairs.
A 30-year-old Boeing 757 is not like a collectible Ferrari and is costing Trump money every day it sits idle. If Trump is fixing the plane to use for another presidential campaign, that is one thing, but if not, he would be better off sending it to Las Vegas and using it as a tourist attraction.
